Thank you for your interest in the Australian Powerlifting Alliance (APA) - The Alliance.

We are proud to announce our affiliation with the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), effective 1st January 2024.

The Alliance is focused on putting athletes are at the centre of everything we do. To do that, APA has been registered as a not-for-profit company. That means that everything earned by the organisation will be reinvested into the sport and the athletes.

Setting up an new Powerlifting Federation from scratch is exciting and at the same time not without its challenges. We have appreciated your patience as we have been working through the requirements, and we will continue to work hard to establish a Federation that you can be proud of.

We also acknowledge that there is lots of information that is still to come, but rest assured, we have a team of dedicated people working on it. We hope that the FAQs below go some way to answering most of your questions. If you require further specific information, please email: info@powerliftingalliance.org.au

FAQ

What are the requirements for qualifying for APA Nationals 2024 as a Junior/Sub-junior/Master?

APU lifters - meet the qualifying total at a state competition.

Other federations - meet the qualifying total at a comp in last 6 months under similar standards (ie no deadlift bars, no wraps, flat foot bench), and satisfy the IPF Article 14 clause (see below).

What are the requirements for qualifying for APA Open Nationals 2024?

APA will be honouring the APU qualification system. If you achieved a podium position at your respective APU States in 2023, you have qualified for APA Open Nationals 2024. Remaining spots will be filled utilising an invite/EOI format based on GL points. Upon APA’s official launch, an EOI/invite system will be released for those who intend to compete at APA nationals.

Information regarding APA Open National Championships will be releasing very shortly. Current expectation is for the event to be held in March.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR QUALIFYING FOR 2024 APA BENCH ONLY CHAMPIONSHIPS/WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS?

APA will not be hosting a bench only championship. An Expression of Interest (EOI) will be released upon APA’s official launch for those who intend to compete at the IPF Bench Only World Championships 2024. The bench only team will be selected from this EOI.

My state competition was cancelled, will I still be able to get to nationals / worlds via APA?

APA understands this unusual situation and an athlete’s total from a recent APU local competition (or any other APU state championship) can be used to apply for the APA’s 2024 Nationals. Remaining spots will be allocated based on GL points to ensure that the best lifters available are at nationals.

WHAT DOES THE APA 2024 COMPETITION CALENDAR LOOK LIKE?

The 2024 APA competition calendar is currently under construction with 16 local competitions currently pencilled in nationally for 2024. This will be released upon APA’s official launch to allow athletes to begin planning their competition year.

What is the policy re: cross federation competing?

APA is bound by Article 14, i.e. if an athlete, coach, and/or referee, while a member of Australian Powerlifting Alliance, takes part in an event that is not associated with WADA, they shall render themselves ineligible for 12 months (this applies to National, Regional, Invitational and International Championships, however local competitions are permitted).

Does IPF article 14 apply for APA Nationals 2024?

As APA is a new federation, members coming from other federations can apply with no waiting period. However, approval will depend on which federation you are coming from.
